On Monday, April 27th 2009, I had quite the surprise as i arose from my bed on the morning of my birthday simply to check my Facebook notifications, and i see that GLBTU, the gay lesbian bisexual transexual union on campus had sent students a message about an anti gay rally that was going on at that very moment. All i said is leave it to me to have an eventful morning just like myself (laughs).

Our school's slogan is Think Wide Open. Therefore, there is not only a tolerance but an acceptance and respect for each students individuality and sexual preferences. I would say that an estimated 200 students came out to the the mall otherwise known as the Great Lawn to support their fellow students against these protesters that claimed that 'gays' need salvation. Many things were said and many acts were committed that i thought were just despicable. Purchase students kept their cool and mocked some of the comments being made.

Everything started due to 3 people, one of them a student who was formerly gay himself and another man and woman. Though one of them claimed that his sin was not homosexuality that it was adultery, everyone would shake their head in disbelief. They stood with picket signs claiming that a homosexual way of life was not the right life and involving religion in an attempt to get the gay community to listen.

One of my friends actually captured a video of one of the protestors cleaning off the mega phone because the person that passed it to him was gay and dressed in drag. Our very own Russel Zambito from the PSGA ( pictured on your right) stood proud and asked the crowd " who here identifies as straight!? " and many students raised their hands, " Now who here identifies as queer!?... Apprarently we won 200 to 3!" and the crowd cheered with encouragement. " It just showed the unity that exists here" said Hylenne Goris, a witness and student at Purchase College. I witnessed the rally when it was just stirring up, yet there were already a lot of people there. Russel Zambito also known as Queen Laquiefa led the crowd as he said " tell me who let you on this campus so i can put their first born in heels" and everyone cheered. It was to everyone's surprise that such a thing would be happening here!

I feel that his video was basically enough proof that these two grown people used religion to manipulate our student and use him as a way to get students even more outraged but at least lure them to the sight so they can preach their ideas on homosexuality. Personally, what bothered me the most is that what they did was a sign of hate and lack of tolerance, because when asked if he had anything against homosexuals he denied it and responded, " why are you against Christianity?" and everyone near him said they weren't including myself. Another student told him that we were against hate not religion.

I felt like while i was out there i represented the acceptance from the heterosexual community towards the gay community in our school as well as every gay couple that wasn't there to speak against this movement. I think overall it was empowering to see that when anyone in our community is in need for support we all come together and i think that was very clear that sunny, hot afternoon on April 27.

"We are not against religion, we are against hate!"
